Greetings from Holland

It’s Sunday night and I’ve been in rainy Holland for a day or so – on business. We’re staying in The Haag.. which is south of Amsterdam.

I haven’t had much time to explore yet – as we prepare for meetings tomorrow.. but here’s what I’ve got so far!

1st.. there are TONS of bikes in this country. Here’s a bike rack… or should I say a series of bike racks outside a public building. That’s a lot of bikes.

2nd.. our Hotel, the Des Indes, is really beautiful. 14’ ceilings in the guest rooms. Georgous architecture. Very ornate! Here’s a picture of part of my room. It’s comfortable.. but lonely without Julie ;(

3rd.. this is a cool mixture of old and new Europe. Here’s a picture I got in the brief time period where there wasn’t rain and I got to get outside and walk around. Everywhere in Holland there are rivers/or canals.. or whatever you would call them. I tried to capture this picture that is an old style building with lights reflected in the canal… with the outlines of more modern buildings in the background. The old with the new. Anyways.. I tried ;)

Okay.. off to bed for me in preparations for our meeting tomorrow. I love you all and look forward to getting back home!

TKA Alumni Game

Wednesday afternoon the TKA Knights alumni took to the basketball court to play against the current varsity basketball team in this annual pre-Thanksgiving day event.

Hannah was among the returning alumni that played!

The alumni teased the varsity - even letting them get ahead early in the 4th quarter - before yanking the meat from their forks and nailing down a solid victory.

Just to tell you how seriously the girls take it... at one point the referee had to warn the alumni team to 'stop playing so aggressively' - or he was going to start calling technical fouls and throwing girls out of the game ;) I think he was scared for the varsity!

Here's one of my favorites! Hannah and Blair chest bumping after the victory. Ahhh.. how sweet it is to remember the old days!

In any event.. Hannah the rest of her friends were walking gingerly on Thanksgiving - nursing their wounds - but basking in the glory of their victory.

Sweet Victory!

Cal vs. Stanford is the 'Big Game' in the Pac 10.

Yesterday Stanford came to Cal attempting to prove there is parity in the Bay Area!

Just checking out Hannah's joyous celebration.. you know that there is none! Cal handed Stanford a decisive spanking winning 37-16!

GO BEARS!!

So, Hannah text messages me right before the end of the game asking me "if I get arrested.. will you pay my bail?!". Too funny. The moment the gun went off to end the game.. off went Hannah and her gal pals to celebrate!

Here's the email I received last night from her:

Hi daddy, so i know you are probably depressed about Michigan getting their butts handed to them... so i thought i would cheer you up and send you the AWESOME photos we took today when we rushed the field!!! Unfortunately, i did not get arrested, but i did get to meet a lot of players and take pictures with them!!!! It was the best game ever!! K enjoy!!

So, Hannah - you perfect daughter! Here you go! Congratulations on a fabulous victory!

Not Just Fun and Games

This weekend was spectacular! It's been in the mid 70's to low 80's!

However, there is a downside, of sorts. It's not S*N*O*W.. Joanne... but it is M*O*W!!

Have a great week!

Mt. Tamalpais

With Julie in Oregon attending Carissa's bridal shower.. it was up to me to make my own fun. So, I decided to check out Mt. Tamalpais - which is just north of the Golden Gate bridge in Marin Country. I've never visited since moving to California (which is pretty pathetic when you realize it is only 60 miles away!).

Mt. Tamalpais (Miwok Indian for 'coast mountain') is 2,571 ft tall rising majestically from the heart of Marin County. I didn't have a map.. so I basically drove to the park and started looking for trail heads for some hiking. It was a gorgeous day (75-80 degrees!) which made Julie jealous because she's been dealing with clear but COLD weather in Oregon).

There's no lack of trails. The first hike I made was out towards the ocean through the grasslands that overlook the Pacific.

Next, I found a trail that went along the watershed.. which I imagine would be way more spectacular in Spring when the water levels are higher! I followed the trail for a mile and a half or so and back. It was a very pleasant walk through some beautiful woods (got me out of the sun!) and Fall foliage. Here's a few pictures I took along the way.

Then, I made a push for the peak. The following picture was my goal.. the ranger fire monitoring station at the top of the mountain. Since there is a parking lot fairly close.. it wasn't too bad or too long of a hike up to be honest. And getting to the top was well worth the effort. Check out all the people just hanging at the top (which would make Julie a smidge nervous!).

From the peak you have a 360 degree panoramic view of the the entire bay area (Click the image below to enlarge it to see the details!). You can see the cargo ships making their way to the Golden Gate.. through and into the bay. The picture shows Marin county down to San Francisco in the background. That's the Bay Bridge to the left of San Francisco - connecting SF to Oakland. The Bay Bridge is very unique because it is a suspension bridge between SF and Treasure Island.. then transitions into a more standard bridge to the east (left) of the island. That's Alcatraz - The Rock - out in the middle of the Bay.

It was fun to get to play with my camera a bit and just get out and get some fun exercise. I can't wait to return again. Next time I'll have to get Tim to go with me!

Thank You

I am so thankful to all the veteran's (my father - pictured on right below - and father-in-law included) for their dedication, sacrifice and unselfish service to this nation over the years. I appreciate their efforts to secure and maintain all of our freedom.

On your day... and all days... thank you!

And to Chris who will soon join their ranks.. a special thank you to you as well!

It's Fall!

Wow.. this sight made me realize that it is officially FALL! Julie looked soooo comfy and warm as she balled up on the couch this afternoon to take a quick nap. I had to snap a picture.

She deserved a down afternoon since she gave blood earlier today.

And.. now that she is awake there is the wonderful smell of apple crisp in the air. It's baking now and will be ready in about 20 minutes! I love Fall!

The only thing missing was the first fire in the fireplace. Done!

Congratulations

My sincere congratulations to President Elect Obama.

While I may be philosophically unaligned with him - I wish him the best and will show him the respect his office deserves as he serves the American people.

I know we have a mixed philosophical crowd that reads and participates on the blog.. so I congratulate all you who enjoyed the victory last night as well.

Have a great day!

Federalist Papers #10

The Federalist Papers were a series (85) of newspaper articles that were written in an attempt to educate the voting citizens of early America in order to facilitate ratification of the US Constitution. They act as a primary source for interpretation of the Constitution, as they outline the philosophy and motivation of the proposed system of government.

Federalist Paper #10 discusses the advantages of a Democratic Republic (and warns of the dangers of a democracy) as a means of preventing faction and advocates for a large republic . It is generally regarded as the most important of the 85 articles from a philosophical perspective.

Note the list of 'improper or wicked projects' that were examples of the kinds of 'maladies' that were specifically trying to be avoided by the founders via a choice of virtuous representatives that could/would override the democratic will, when necessary:
"A rage for paper money for an abolition of debts, for an equal division of property, or for any other improper or wicked project, will be less apt
to pervade the whole body of the Union than a particular member of it;
in the same proportion as such a malady is more likely to taint a
particular county or district, than an entire State."

Sound vaguely familiar to what you've been hearing about lately?

Boo!

Check out Julie's contribution to the pumpkin world, 2008 (the one with the rats)! She 'carved' her pumpkin using my power drill ;)

The other pumpkin (the one with the smile) is Rachel's - who carved her first pumpkin in many a year. That's Julie and Rachel at the door giving out candy to a group of kids. This was the first time Rachel had ever given out candy to kids on Halloween night. So cute!
