Celine!

Friday night was very exciting for Julie! She got to check off a big entry on her 'bucket list' by attending the Celine Dion Concert at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

Yes, Celine finally made it. She was originally scheduled to play here last November.. but she contracted laryngitis and had to cancel. So, the entire Bay Area was on pins and needles until her re-arrival Friday night.

As Julie puts it "It was the best evening of my life. Celine sang all my favorites. She was simply amazing! And I am absolutely certain that she waved at me when she said 'Good Bye San Jose' at the end of the concert!"

The evening was made possible by the wonderful people at Craigslist where Julie was able to pick up a couple tickets 3 hours before the concert! Isn't the internet wonderful!

I will say that I was just slightly disappointed because Julie was a bit under the weather and unable to sing along with Celine.. so that was a bit of a downer. But, overall the concert was really well done.

Tickets: $80
Opportunity to watch Julie be so excited for 2 hours: priceless.

Double Doody

You gotta love those paragons of virtue that run Washington. Nothing like taking it in the shorts before and after the fact. To whit:

The Before:
The House rules require that all conference reports (which is how the stimulus bill was reported to the floor of Congress for voting) be made publicly available for 48 hours before consideration (meaning: voting). The day before the stimulus bill was voted on, the House Rules Committee waived that requirement to allow the House leadership to bring the bill to floor immediately.

Apparently we need to start keeping a list. Here, let me get this started:

Things Public Servants don't need to do:
  • Pay taxes (discussed earlier)
  • Follow their own rules
The After:
On July 31st, 2007 the House overwhelmingly approved a sweeping lobbying and ethics reform bill on a 411-8 vote. Hmm with that kind of majority they must have really meant it!

“We have kept our promise to drain the swamp that is Washington, D.C.,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. - we're sorry America) said, adding that the legislation is “historic.”

The bill requires lawmakers to identify earmarks included in bills and conference reports and post them on the Internet within 48 hours.

Well, the Stimulus package passed many days ago now.. and that didn't happen either. Let's just add that to our little 'ol list:

Things Public Servants don't need to do:
  • Pay taxes (discussed earlier)
  • Follow their own rules
  • Follow the Ethics laws they pass

Naming Rights

In a further effort to address the skyrocketing federal deficit, officials in the nation's capitol today revealed that President Obama recently completed a deal to sell the naming rights to his presidential economic team for the duration of his first term.

Details of the contract were not readily available but inside sources close to the negotiations, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that a syndicate of prominent Democrats from Green Bay and Chicago prevailed in the bidding.

Indications are that as early as Sunday President Obama may make a formal announcement of the agreement which will officially dub his economic team 'The Green Back Porkers'.

Tart-tastic!

Did Julie and I tell you that we now have personal chefs?

I don't know what we possibly did to be blessed like this.. but Jon and Rachel have taken to making us dinner once a week for the last few weeks. I'm getting to the point that I get generally excited about rolling into the driveway Monday nights - just to see the feast-of-the-week.

Last weekend we got a very special bonus course. Tarts! And they were delicious! I don't just mean that they tasted good. I mean they were 'beyond good'. They were .. tart-tastic! The 'shells' or whatever the chef-specific term for the crust is - was absolutely perfect. It was uniform in thickness and just the right texture. The 'cream' or 'filling' or 'tart guts' or whatever you would call the middle part was heaven. It was creamy and smooth and I simply loved the tart taste. Topped off with 'succulent' fruit these were treats fit for a king!

I would definitely get in my car, drive to a store and buy those bad-boys. Scrumptious!

And they look simply spectacular. Don't they?

I feel so blessed to have great friends! Thank you God. And thank you Jon and Rachel for sharing your precious talent and time with us!

Innovators!

California is unabashedly a state of innovators! Google? Started here. Yahoo? Yep. That woman that just spat out 8tuplets and the doctor that impregnated her with zygotes 7 thru 14? Uh-huh.. Calfornians! I'm misty with pride.

And now we're doing some impressive work innovating on taxes. Yes, people.. California is on fire with great ideas for 'fixing' their budget crisis. And a doosey that crisis is. At present the state is spending $10 for every $6 of 'revenue'. 'Revenue' - that's our innovative name for the product of using the power of the state to confiscate money from individuals and business for the legislature to spend.

Of course we could have opted for old ideas like balancing our budget. Or perhaps we could save for a rainy day. Or here's a good 'ol idea that has gone by the wayside: only offering services that we can afford. Nahh... those ideas are for states like Arkansas. You know.. second tier states. Not innovators like California.

So here's what we've come up with! Okay jealous states... you can read this list but don't try to implement these policies without parental supervision!

Taxing Taxes!
This is truly a superior idea derived from exhaustion. Our legislatures have been working hard. I just read an article that says they have been working for 3 whole days nonstop. Can you imagine it? State employees working three whole days in a row - including a weekend day?

Well, simply put they're exhausted. It is downright tiring to have to conceive of new things to tax. They came up with all the old standards... like increasing the gas tax.. increasing car registration fees.. increasing the state sales tax (or as I am referring to it forevermore.. the state sales 'tithe' since it is almost 10% now). But that just wasn't enough. No. When you have a $42 Billion budget crisis you have to innovate!

So what's a tired legislator to do? Lay people off? Reduce state services? Reduce the number of paid holidays for state employees (currently 14 or more than twice the 6 the general public gets)? Identify and reduce areas of inefficiency in government? Dis-allow the use of union labor to provide government services? People... those are not innovative ideas. Any two-bit business owner knows that to balance a budget you have to align spending with your expected revenues and pay employees market wages. Heck, we could get the owner of a local Pizza Hut to do that kind of thing. We need innovation!

But we're tired. Sooooo tired. People - it is exhausting writing bills for 36 million people to pay. Exhausting.

That's when the lighbulb went on. Yreka! One of the legislatures screamed. 'Let's tax our taxes!' And then the lightbulbs went on across the state legislative chambers. The 'ah-ha' moment had arrived with fury.

So, here's what they decided to do... place a 'surchange on California's income tax'. 'Huh?' you say. What's that? That's a tax on our income tax. Let me explain. Say you have an income tax system. You could change the income tax rates.. but that is an annnoying process requiring effort and communication with voters and messy stuff like that. So, what you do is simply say.. 'taxpayers... when you're done completing your taxes... just give us another 5%.' That's a surcharge on the income tax. Beautiful isn't it!

And it's a very 'extensible' idea as we say in the software world. It can be extended and applied, simply, to all sorts of additional taxes. So - here's some surcharges we can be looking forward to soon: A surcharge on Investment gains. A surcharge on business profits. A surcharge on passive income (rental property revenues). The possibilities are only limited by how many taxes we already have.. and that's a lot of possibilities!

Taxing Services!
Another truly superior idea is to tax services. You see, in most cases we tax stuff people buy(sales tithe), the work people put in to produce the stuff people buy (income taxes) and the profits derived from producing the stuff people buy (business taxes).

Well.. hello!! We're actively driving people out of the state in droves with our excrutiating business taxes and government regulation ( the 'hidden taxes' .. shhhh). That means revenue is down!

So, what's a state to do? Well, the innovators in our state legislature are all over this. They just figured out that the only thing people in California are bound to be doing at this point is providing services. Like doing surgery on a gerbil. Or tax preparation (a biggie!). You know.. using that 'ol noggin'.

And then came the second 'ah-ha' moment. 'Dude, we could tax people for, like, receiving services. You know... like pretty much any customer of anyone!

Whew!! That was a breath of fresh air. So, just when the actual product producers are leaving the state.. we're off and running on turning service providers into tax collection agents for the California State Treasury! Sweet. You provide a service.. start charging tax baby! When you're done performing surgery on that gerbil - tax your customer. When you're done carrying that plate to your customer's table.. tax your customer! Outstanding.

Holy cow! This is going to be BIG!

Okay.. Arkansas... I warned you. Just wait! This is all heading your direction.

Martha.. You Little Minx

John G. wrote me an email the other day that included a story about Martha Dooley. Remember Martha? She is the beautiful elder neighbor of the Griffioens that attended Arie's graduation party. Here she is pictured with Janice.

Well, at the time I met her I realized what a lovely lady Martha was.. but I didn't know much about her background. Here's the story as printed Valentine's day on the front page of the Shelbyville News that tells you a little bit more about the woman in the picture. Thanks John for passing this along!

Valentine's Day is usually viewed as a day to reconnect with loved ones, but the special day is also one that brings back memories of past or lost loves.

Today, 84-year-old Martha Dooley undoubtedly will think of Lyman Dooley, her husband of 35 years, but she also will remember her fiancé, Judge Clayton Hellums, who died in a tank battle in Lorraine, France, at the end of World War II.

Martha was 19 when she met a good-looking solider from Mississippi who was temporarily stationed at Camp Atterbury. She and her niece, Rosella Hatton, were a popular vocal duo who often sang in churches in southwestern Shelby County and even entertained the soldiers at Camp Atterbury. The two were introduced after Martha and Hatton sang at the St. Lewis Crossing Methodist Church in 1942. The young couple fell in love and were engaged before Hellums was shipped to Germany in 1943.

"We didn't really keep our engagement secret," Martha said, "but we didn't tell everybody, either. It was wartime, and the future was so uncertain."

Hellums marked the engagement with a gift of two rings to his fianceé, one a diamond and the other a cameo, and Martha has kept both rings as keepsakes over the past 67 years.

Like so many women who kissed their loved ones goodbye as they left to fight overseas during World War II, Martha never saw her fiancé again. She received a telegram from Hellums' family in Mississippi that he was killed in France on Oct. 9, 1944.

"We lost so many boys in that war," Martha said with a sorrowful shake of her head. "I was so sad for a long time."

To deal with her loss, Martha continued to sing with her niece, and she is certain to this day that her music "is how I survived it." She even wrote a song about Hellums that was published, called "He's My American Hero."

The loss of a son, brother and fiancé to Hellums' loved ones was difficult enough, but Martha said the explosion of Hellums' tank was so complete that none of the men in the tank were ever found. There were no bodies to bury.

Along with the more than 10,000 American soldiers buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in Avold, France, there are 444 names inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing, and Hellums was among their number.

Martha went on with her life, as people are wont to do, marrying Lyman Dooley in 1951, having three children - Kathy, Mike and Jon - and building a home on four acres in Flat Rock. Dooley even spent some time in Germany following World War II, and he remained in the Army National Guard and was even a member of the Air Force Reserve during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Martha and Hellums' sister, Winnie Sykes of Mississippi, remained in contact following his death, and the two women and their spouses even visited each other in Mississippi and Flat Rock.

"Lyman knew about Clayton," Martha said, "and he was never jealous about my being engaged before I met him. Remember that so many men died during World War II."

59 years later

The story of Hellums and Martha takes up again in 2003, 59 years after his death, when a Frenchman named Gerard Louis spots a shiny metal object, the identification tag of an American soldier, while he is taking a walk in the Forest of Parroy in France where many World War II tank battles took place.

In Oct. 1944, two American tanks were blown up by German fire during a devastating battle in the section were Louis walked. He said that the earth was different were he found the tag, speculating that the area was burned and noting that nothing would grow there.

The metal tag was inscribed with the name "CPL Judge C. Hellums" and his serial number, "34048072," and on the reverse side, the name "Martha" was engraved.

Louis was haunted by questions about Hellums and the identity of Martha, and he firmly believed that the tag should be returned to Hellums' family. The Frenchman decided to search for Hellums' relatives in America.

During his search, Louis was informed that Hellums was indeed listed as missing, and a superintendent at the French cemetery informed Louis that he would attempt to locate Hellums' family.

After not hearing any news for several years, Louis went to a local French newspaper, asking for its for its help in the search, and a journalist named Jean-Christophe Pignon publicized the search in a story entitled, "On the Trail of Corporal Hellums."

Hellums' family was actually found by a military research center in Belgium after researchers received a copy of Pignon's article.

Land of Lorraine

In 2006, Dwight Hellums, a brother of Cpl. Judge Clayton Hellums, received a letter hand-written in French that contained a picture of the identification tag, a copy of the news article about the search for Clayton's family and a map of the area where he was killed.

Louis wrote, "I am now happy to have located his family, and happy to know that your brother will not be forgotten on our land of Lorraine, where he gave his life for our freedom. I am proud to have brought the light on this tragedy."

Following the discovery, several members of Hellums' family actually traveled to France for a memorial service in Clayton's honor where they formally received the engraved tag, but Martha declined the invitation to go along.

"I am afraid to fly," she said. "I can't tell you how shocked I was to hear that the tag was found with my name on it."

In an additional touch of romance, the Frenchman Louis and Hellums' sister Winnie fell in love and married after meeting at the French memorial.

"It all seems so long ago," Martha said, looking at a picture of herself at 19 standing beside Hellums in his Army uniform. "But it is something that you never forget."

Senior Night

Julie and I love sports. And we love spectating at sporting events; especially when our children or kids we are close to participate. When Hannah graduated from high school our 'last hope' was Brandon who plays for Archbishop Mitty. I think it would be fair to say that Julie and I adopted Mitty and have been faithful supporters (at least cheer-ers) for the last couple years. It's been exciting - because Mitty has had some great players and teams.. but the truth be known.. I'm pretty sure we would have cheered just as loudly and faithfully no matter the result. The great thing about supporting Mitty has been the opportunity it has given us to hang out with our friends whom we love.

You can imagine, the emotions surrounding Senior Night at Mitty. Soon, Brandon's high school basketball days will be over and he will be moving on to college. So, it will be a bit of a transition for Julie and I as we try to figure out what to do with ourselves during Winter! Not to mention for his parents!

Speaking of his parents.. here's some pictures from the big night. I definitely had my money on Eileen tearing up a bit during the parent introductions before the game. I think she held it together pretty well.. or did a good job hiding it.. but I know Randy and Eileen are very proud of the job that Brandon has done and were excited to join him at center court!

The parents received flowers and a couple gifts including a special t-shirt the team made up! Here's Eileen showing off hers.

The game itself - against Valley Christian (don't get me started!) was hard fought - as evidenced by the huge scratch Brandon experienced towards the end of the game.

Here's a picture that tells you a lot about Brandon. I have been impressed throughout his high school playing days with his ability to lead and encourage on the court. But in this picture you see just how encouraging he is even when he isn't on the court.

However, as with all perfect Senior Nights.. Mitty dominated at the end and went on to an easy 52-41 win. Near the end of the game the big moment came - when the coach pulls the seniors - allowing the fans one more chance to shout their praise! And then it was over. Here's the student section celebrating and singing the Mitty fight song with the players.

As it turns out - this won't be the last home game for Mitty.. so we're not quite done saying goodbye. So, this hug from Julie isn't the last. Mitty will play in the West Catholic league tournament at home this Tuesday. But, sadly, the end is ever too close.

You're Not Paranoid If They Really ARE Watching!

If you go down and check out the blog entry I posted on February 12th you'll notice that I mentioned the US Cabinet. The post itself was just a bit of a political spoof.

When I originally posted the entry I mentioned President Obama. I think I referred to 'President Obama's nominations' to the Cabinet or something of that nature. Later, because as a general rule I don't like to have full (first and last names) proper names on the blog to protect the privacy of family and friends.. I went back and changed the wording slightly to remove the reference to President Obama. Specifically, I changed the phrase to 'everyone recently nominated'.

Anyways... fast forward to the next day. I have some software attached to our blog that allows me to see how many people are checking out the blog and where the blog 'hits' originate from. For instance, I know that Lurinda connects to the internet using a service in Delton.. because that is where I get hits from (along with Plainwell) in southern Michigan.

Using that software, I noticed a huge increase in people checking out the blog on February 12th. So, I went to check out where they came from. I was shocked to see that I received hits from 22 countries and dozens of US states! Yes, 22 countries!

Here's the list:

Brazil, Canada, France, Colombia, Netherlands, Portugal, Mexico, Argentina, Philippines, Austria, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Greece, Japan, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Peru and Poland!

Whoa!

Apparently, there are people around the world very interested in anything written about our President. I don't think they're going to get to much intelligence from this blog (beat you to that!).. but it appears they are watching.

Like I said - you're not paranoid if they really are watching!

Giving New Meaning to 'Wingmen'

Julie and I were watching some TV yesterday when we noticed a weird sound coming from the TV. So, we turned the sound down and low and behold the sound didn't go away. Instead, it was now more distinct! We raced to the door.. ran outside.. and looked up to see the following:

The sound we heard was hundreds of crows screaming as they were flying. We watched the huge pack of birds while trying to figure out what in the world was going on. They were clearly purposeful in their flight.. as they chased across the sky. However, we couldn't quite understand just exactly what they were up to.

Suddenly, we saw a hawk (we think) fly by with a crow in its talons. The victim's friends were all rallying to its aid - chasing the perpetrator all over the sky! At one point the hawk settled into the tree just behind our house (see below).. with all the crows circling and trying to aid their friend.

I'm not sure it did any good. But it was a very interesting sight to behold.

Crazy Idea

This is the kind of idea you come up with when you sit in meetings all day and wish you were elsewhere.

I got to thinking about the budget crisis and the stimulus plan and all. I know. I know. No one wants to think about that. I get it.

But - here's my unique plan to rescue the nation. So, listen up.

At the present time the US Cabinet has 16 members (the VP + 15 Department Heads). I say that is wayyyyy too few!

My logic? Note that pretty much everyone recently nominated to the Cabinet has a significant outstanding (past) tax liability. Further, they will likely be increasing their future tax payments now that they actually understand that they are expected (at least for the public's sake) to pay taxes.

Here's my idea.. increase the Cabinet size ... to say... 1 million people. By the time the vetting process completes.. they should have coughed up hundreds of billions of dollars of unpaid taxes; with the prospects of another few hundred billion in future (accurate) payments.

If you think that might be just a few too many... perhaps as an alternative... we could simply nominate the 1 million people to the still unfilled seats... let them catch up on their tax payments as they go through the vetting process.. then reject them.

Thus, the other 300 Million of us will be saved the drama.

Your thoughts? ... while I get back to work ;)

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This morning started out with incredible news from our talented daughter! Hannah recently applied to the Haas Undergraduate Business program at Cal. This is an intensive program and one of the most highly rated undergraduate business programs in the nation (#3 in one 2008 ranking... alas Michigan was #4).

As a result, this is an extremely competitive program. Essentially, you have to get into Berkeley (although some transfer students are admitted). Then, you study for a year and a half in preparation for applying. You apply as a sophomore - for admission as a junior - to the program. So, in essense you have to get into Berkeley (a tough gig).. study hard and demonstrate your leadership skills.. apply.. with about 2,000 other people.. then get selected. Only 350 students are admitted each year.

We have known for awhile that February 11th was the 'big day' for hearing back and I woke up this morning in anticipation. You know when Hannah calls before 9:00 AM.. that it is either really good news.. or really bad ;) She called at 8:27 AM!

I am so proud to tell you that the folks over at Haas (pictured below) had the incredibly good sense to admit Hannah. Yeah! Lucky for then, because her backup plan if not admitted was to get a different degree.. take over the world.. and then remove the administrators from Haas - one by one. Way to dodge that bullet people!

In all seriousness - this is an astounding achievement and one that I am so proud to share with you. Hannah has worked diligently on developing her intellect, leadership and interpersonal relationship skills and this acknowledgement from Haas is well deserved (IMHO). We love you Hannah and will continue to pray for and support you as you take on this wonderful new challenge.

P.S. Congratulations to Calvin as well - who was also accepted!

Surprise!

Yesterday we surprised our friend Tim with a 60th birthday party. Yes, we are old enough to have friends that are 60 ;) Hard to believe.

So, the plan was to bring him directly from the Standford vs Washington game to Armadillo Willy's - a great barbeque place. We had arranged for a number of his friends (and ours) to meet there and surprise him when he arrived. A bit of a problem occurred. The game went really fast! So, we were stuck trying to figure out how to stall for an hour.

Thankfully, we were in luck. Tim had been out of town attending a wedding and was to arrive, go home and clean up, and go to the game with Auntie and I. However, his plane was delayed.. and he arrived just in time for us to scoop him up at the airport and get to the game. We literally sat down as the tip-off occurred.

So, he had already had a long day and was interested in going home and taking a shower. So - we let him do that.. and then were off to Willy's.

Okay.. you know you have an OLD friend.. when he gets to Willy's... sees several of his friends and just thinks it's all an amazing coincidence. HELLO!!!! It's a surprise birthday party Tim!

We had a great BBQ dinner and then headed back to our house - which had been decorated for the celebration. We did the cake thing (Tim's fav - Mint Chip ice cream cake).. and presents and just had fun enjoying time with Tim.

Tim's actual birth date is February 11th.. so technically he's still just 59.99.... so Tim enjoy your last few days of pre-geezer!

At Long Last!

Sunday afternoon I had the opportunity to go to the Stanford vs. Washington men's basketball game at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus. Tim received the tickets from Julie L.'s boyfriend, Evan (a Stanford student), for Christmas and has been anticipating this game for weeks. For some reason.. he decided to take me along which was awesome.

Washington's been doing amazingly well in the Pac-10 this year and is looking at a definite NCAA tournament invitation. However, they've lost for 15 consecutive years at Maples despite some incredible efforts. In fact, last year Tim and I went and witnessed a heartbreaking last minute defeat at the hands of Stanford.

However, we were hopeful as we returned this year.. with Auntie joining us. And it was a great afternoon to witness Washington finally defeat the curse and crush Stanford in Palo Alto!

One of the heros leading the Washington victory was guard Isaiah Thomas (yes, named the same as the NBA hall of famer and former Indiana star and Detroit Piston). Here he is going inside. He made the basket.. but somehow the refs didn't see enough contact to call a foul!

And here's Jon Brockman - Washington's star senior forward scoring two of his 13 points (with his 12 rebounds!). Brockman is only 6'-7" but plays much taller. He is a tremendous inspiration to watch because he is a guy who never stops. He never slows down. And he never gives up. I have seen him play tons of games against bigger, taller, better basketball players. But, I've never seen him outplayed. Not once. He is, in every sense of the words, a basketball player.

The Stanford band and mascot are always a lot of fun and high energy. Stanford has a very unusual mascot; The Tree. The Tree has quite a history - having previously been banned at least twice by the NCAA. But it hasn't diminished The Tree's enjoyment. It loves to dance during timeouts! Also note the student section. If you look close you'll see some 'Beat Cal' t-shirts. They wish ;)

Ahhhhh... 15 years of frustration come to an end!

And finally, here's Tim and Auntie sucking in the joy outside the stadium!

More Eagle Pictures!

Wow... another strong entry in the Foreign Picture category!

These pictures are from Lori - my sister's friend. They once again went to Illinois to shoot eagles over the weekend. With a camera that is. And these are some sweet pictures.

Let's hear it for the photographer!

19-Mitty!!!!

You know how when a team has won, say, 3 games and has lost 2 they say the team's record is '3-2' or '3 and 2'?

Well... St. Francis' record this year in basketball is now 19-Mitty! We just came from the most amazing high school basketball game we've seen in a very long time! Mitty, featuring our favorite high school basketball player.. Brandon (pictured playing this Summer on his AAU team).. just laid down the first blemish on the St. Francis schedule (until tonight they were 19-0). Final score 68-66.

Mitty played an intense game. Their defense was stellar. And then there was Brandon's offensive display! Yeah, he totally PWNED SF. He had two amazing dunks and 30 points in leading Mitty to victory.

I just hope the headline writers at the SJ Mercury News splash it in bold letters across the Sports Page:

St. Francis: 19-Mitty!
